Sixteen years ago, when I was in third grade, my dad gave me this necklace for Valentine's Day. I remember wearing it to school for the first time and checking over & over again to make sure the love letter was still inside. Later, I tucked it in the side pocket of my book bag for safe keeping during recess. When I wear it now, the risk of losing the letter while trying to set a "skip-it" record is gone, but I still open the envelope often and check on its contents. It could be out of habit, but I think it's also because it reminds me of how I felt when I first received the necklace--a mixture of anticipation, excitement, and feeling so loved. It's no coincidence that even now I feel just the same way when I get a personal letter in the mail.
